My students are Advanced Placement Literature and Composition students who choose to be in the class and are very interested in learning, but do not always come to the class with the necessary cultural and historical literacies needed for success. We are constantly competing with the higher-income, higher performing school "over the hill" and our school is working hard to make our kids competitive. We start from the beginning and make tremendous gains during the course of the year. All my students report that taking my class has them completely prepared for the writing and thinking they need to do in college, which is more important to me than passing the AP test, but they do pretty well on that, too. My pass rate is the highest in the district (75-80% of the students pass)and one of the highest of all exams offered on our campus.
