As part of a cross-curricular unit with our Social Studies department, my students read Wilkerson's masterpiece while they not only learn about The Great Migration but they trace their own family's historical journey from South to North. We throw in a little Jacob Lawrence. We cook some of the recipes that were brought North (cornbread, sweet potato pie, collards...yum!). And we listen to some of the music that migrated North as well. Wilkerson's book details specific individuals and helps students envision the journey and some of the lives involved. We did a trial run last year and students loved it!
