I teach three sections of freshman United States History and two sections of Academic Assistance which provides support to at-risk high school students. Many students at my public high school struggle with reading and/or reading comprehension. The special education students have Individualize Education Plans which outline classroom accommodations that will essentially level the playing field for special education students. The most common accommodation is audio support. In particular, assessments/tests need to be read aloud to these students. Many of the students know the information but the actual paper-style assessment/test gets in the way of what they truly know. Our current system for providing audio testing involves removing the students from the regular classroom setting and sending them to a resource room for the test to be read by another teacher. I seek MP3 player technology to provide audio testing to students without removing them from the classroom.
