Our school is comprised of over 80% African-American students that are living below the poverty level and in single parent homes. Our building is located within a large urban school district in southwest Ohio. My class is a combination of special needs and general education students. Our school library is limited to just a few selections of magazines that would introduce them to other cultures and other places around the world. The students tend to gravitate to these magazines because of their thirst for adventure. Due to lack of exposure, my students struggle with the visualization required to fully understand non-fictional text. They also have a limited vocabulary as a result of their restricted experiences. The scoring proficiency on state assessments is consistently lower than expectation.
