Depravity exists in my school, far more than ever before. Where you live should not determine if you have quality educational resources. Our school's public and state funding is limited. My students notice the difference between their own schooling environment and other schools in the same district down the street. ALL students should have the privilege of quality teaching and resources, despite their family's zip code. Our school is located in a high crime, high poverty neighborhood. My students face fears and worries I never had myself. The school should be a safety zone, where learning is central and the world of reading is opened. If only my students could be exposed to a world beyond their own, a world with the hope of success and to make a difference. When students of poverty are exposed to reading, they are given a lifelong educational tool that allows them to reach beyond their current neighborhood.
