My first grade students come from a high poverty community in Texas and came to me at the beginning of the year performing dangerously low academically. I have seen them transform from very active little kindergarteners, to hard-working almost-second-graders. They have developed an insatiable curiosity about other kinds of people and places and have developed a love for reading.
