While researching the benefits of flexible seating, I found more benefits to it than I expected. This type of seating environment allows children to wobble, rock, bounce, learn or stand which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focuses which is a difficult feat for 7 and 8-year-olds. Sitting in a plastic hard chair all day leads to an uncomfortable student which further results in a distracted and unproductive student. Flexible seating allows students to easily and quickly pair up, and work in small groups. Small group collaboration is a highly effective teaching strategy that not only builds communication skills of students but results in higher achievement. Many flexible seating options stimulate students' sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information much better. This type of sensory stimulation has shown to be extremely beneficial for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. Source: (The 10 Benefits of Flexible-Seating Classroom Smithsystems.com/smithfiles)
