I work in an urban, inner city school district where students do not have the adequate resources available to aid in diverse, cross curricular development. I have a classroom of 27 exceptional fourth graders who are eager to learn and explore information. I have been adamant as an educator about creating a community in my classroom where students feel safe and secure in their learning. My students are inquisitive individuals who want to explore a variety of texts and information found in many books but we do not have these opportunities working in a high priority, urban school setting. My students have worked very hard to learn all year to further the own understanding of various concepts. Each learner takes ownership in his or her own learning. We are looking diminish the educational gap, increase student success and create a fundamental classroom environment conducive to adequate learning and real word application.
