Yes, this novel is a bit dark, but it is a fabulous read! Hunger Games is one of my favorite novels and the students in the previous years that have read it could not put it down! I do a reading inventory in the beginning of the year and one of the questions I ask my students is: "How many books do you have at home?" The majority of answers I get is under 5. One of my goals, as a teacher in a low SES population( 99.3% on free and reduced lunch) is to make sure that my students have access to literature that engages them. Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in Illinois and our population is 99% Hispanic. It amazes me how much my students love to read, provided that they have access to engaging literature. My absolute favorite things to do after I finish a book is go back and blog about it on our classroom blog. Shortly after, I have 20 students at my desk asking for a copy of it!
