My school is a Title One school. Many of our families are living at or just above the poverty level. My children face many challenges at home. Our school community has changed drastically over the last decade, as it was built around GM and now most of the shops are closed. Our staff and the children's parents want what is best for these very needy students. They need to feel safe, cared for and understand how important education is for their futures. The digital age has created children who are use to watching TV, movies and playing video games. They expect to be entertained and if learning is not engaging they lose interest quickly. My children want to learn and I want to provide them with interesting, hands on ways for them to do so. When children are able to actively participate in their own learning it is more meaningful to them and much more effective. When my children are able to have hands-on activities they get excited and can't wait to get started. We need more!
