Our urban school serves students from many different ethnic and social backgrounds, many of whom struggle to read on grade level. We have had limited or no funding for library materials for many years, and the equipment in the school is hopelessly outdated or broken. Our students need every support they can get to learn to read, write and speak effectively, and being able to listen to their own voices, and to share oral projects, would be tremendously beneficial. We know from experience with activities that we have undertaken in other area schools that being able to create recorded stories and to listen to their own voices helps the students master the English language.
