Our school is one that is highly impoverished in an area that I grew up in so I have a lot of stake in trying to make a real positive change. We are a 2nd grade class (7 and 8 year old children) that deal with many extreme problems that some schools may never be aware of. I have 5 students (out of 20) that get a food bag sent home each weekend so they can have something to eat. We have multiple families sharing homes with very overcrowded rooms not conducive for a healthy growing young brain. Many families are single mothers trying to make ends meet, working as hard as possible to give their children a life they never had. One mother I met with last week was just able to quit her third job and was really excited that now she only has two jobs so she can see her kids more. Academics are important, but these kids need REAL skills to help them not only survive, but THRIVE in the real world.
