My students come from a wide range of backgrounds and economic profiles. I have many students who do not have access to home computers or other technology. On the other side of the spectrum, I have students who have their own personal laptops, phones, and iPods. These few carry Kindles, Nooks, or E-Readers to school daily. Our school is a public K-5 elementary school that places a huge emphasis on reading for pleasure and reading to learn. With our move to The Common Core Standards, nonfiction reading and real life application of knowledge is critical to classroom success. The new recommended reading list contains excellent literature yet is very extensive. The technology component of the curriculum is exciting but unfortunately limited by the amount and diversity of technology available to my students, both at home and in the classroom.
