Our school garden is our outdoor classroom. Each classroom has an assigned time to work in their raised garden box, where they grow, flowers, veggies and herbs. Along with growing things we are learning about composting and recycling. Our goal is to recycle at least 10% of our cafeteria food waste, and eventually grow to at least 50%. Our goal is to place a viewing box in each classroom, so the students will be able to view and decomposition process up close and personal on a daily basis, to better understand how they are helping make better soil for their gardens. Each classroom teacher will do follow up lessons, and extensions to lessons that will be or have been taught in the garden and in the composting area. By having the viewing boxes in the classroom, each student has a better chance of seeing the process more regularly and gain a better understanding.
