MAC students are at-risk kids--those students who are living on/below poverty-level environments. Many of my students, male and female, are teen parents. We try to keep an eye on their children and help them to receive counseling and coordinate state services such as physician and DHS appointments. We flex their school day so that they may go to work to pay for their own apartments etc. Some of my kids abuse drugs/alcohol, some have trouble with the law, and some have suffered from a tremendous loss--death of a parent/grandparent or what they perceive as their own lives. Many come from generations of substance abusers and poverty. They are often referred to as the 'throw away kids', but they have proven themselves to be the best and the brightest once they achieve graduation and begin their new journey. They become happy, productive citizens with families and solid community members. We are thrilled for this class trip opportunity.
