I am a teacher at Brown Street Academy where 98% of the students receive free lunch. Our test scores are improving but are still well below state standards. Students are making great gains and will continue to with the help of classroom libraries both fiction and nonfiction. Reading on a daily basis and offering the students a variety of choices is very important. I want my students up on current events as well on nonfiction readings. Students don't go to the library on their own and books are not really part of their home culture. Most students only have and use books in the classroom. I want them comfortable reading all genes so when test do come along they are familiar and comfortable reading this type of material.
