My middle school students are excited about learning only when the experiences are unique and applicable to their real-world experiences and connections. They need to be innately hooked on reading in a non-threatening environment outside of the classroom parameters. They are inquisitive, creative and analytical thinkers who deserve to experience the literary world through vicarious and kinesthetic experiences. My students attend an urban school in Missouri where the free and reduced lunch count is relatively high. They are not easily convinced about the value of education and they essentially need all of the opportunities available to be "turned on by reading and learning." Over half of the students I service are African American males who need to improve their reading skills and proficiency expediently to become productive citizens of society. No longer can educators meet the needs of at risk students by utilizing only traditional strategies. Help me help them think outside the bus!
