My school is located in a densely populated urban area. My students are a diverse group of students, 95% of whom will be the first to go to college. What they lack in opportunity to attend college, they make up for in their aspirations to be the first to attend college. Many of my students' parents are willing to work multiple low wage jobs in order to make ends meet, but employment is often unstable. My students know that in order to change their future and have a positive effect on their family's trajectory they need to develop a plan for after high school. At our school we continually try to send the message that we believe in our students' dreams and that we want to help them make those dreams into reality. We teach them about the American college system, how financial aid works, and what they need to prepare to apply, get accepted, and persist in college.
