I teach history to 10th graders in a public school that struggles to provide materials and opportunities to students. Reading is often not one of the strengths of my students, so they have not learned to enjoy books. When I introduced the idea of reading a book together last year, I heard some groans and moans from even some of the better readers. I think it's such a shame that students at their age have not read books that they like. Reading is a chore to them instead of a pleasure. One of my goals this school year is to offer the opportunity to my students to read more often. So much emphasis is placed on test scores recently that reading books gets pushed aside.
