Our school is a Title 1 school in a high poverty community. The majority of my students are second language learners; their parents do not speak English. My kindergartners lack vocabulary and sentence structure. Throughout the day I provide think-pair-share opportunities so my students practice correct sentence structure. We then write. I engage my students in daily shared and guided writing to develop their writing skills. Many are shy and seldom come to the classroom whiteboard to write. My desire is to provide them with ample speaking and writing opportunities. The reality is that they don't practice English at home with their parents. Parents cannot help them write words or simple sentences.
