My students come from a city where the population consists of 46,837 residents, primarily of Hispanic descent (81%). The population also includes Asian (12%), Caucasian (5%) and African-American (2%). Forty-two percent of the community was born outside of the United States, and 12% immigrated within the last 15 years. The median family income is $36,674. The community is relatively young, with 37% of the population under the age of 21. Fifty percent of the adults over 25 have less than a high school education. Forty percent of children under 17 live in poverty. Like many other similar communities in around this area, this community has a noticeable presence of gang activity.
