My students are products of the achievement gap. Like nearly all fourth and fifth graders at Kelsey Pharr Elementary School, they are African-American or Hispanic and come from low-income backgrounds. Many of them read one to three years below grade level. Few of them meet expectations on state tests. The level and quality of academic work they do is far below that of their middle and high-income peers in other parts of Miami-Dade County. My students have been left behind.
