Developmental kindergarten is a first year program for students that have a severe learning disability, mildly mentally handicapping condition, autism, or other disabilities that prevent them from attending a general education classroom. We strive to increase their skills to a level that will promote general education kindergarten the next school year. Students frequently arrive to our class from impoverished homes throughout our county. They often lack any pre-writing or reading skills. Some have only attended preschool for special students a half day the previous year. These children require a well structured environment as they develop their academic skills and as they learn to overcome their disabilities. Children at age five (with a two year delay)require a delicate balance of movement and personal space throughout the day.
