The most controversial scientific subject of the last 150 years is also perhaps the most misunderstood! I am a Biology teacher in the area of New Orleans that was most devastated by Katrina. My 10th graders are resilient and intelligent, but have been set back by a devastating natural disaster and a school system that is only recently gaining control after decades of failing the student body. Last year, only 6% of the student body scored above basic on the science portion of the state standardized test. As a first year teacher, and a Teach for America corps member, I am pushing to drastically change that percentage.
