My school is in a predominately working class Latino community. About 95% of the students are on the free lunch program. Most are limited English speakers. The school provides a recess period for 20 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon. The children do not engage in any real rigorous activity as the children are directed to stay in certain assigned play areas. School policy does permit the children to run which is what most boys and girls want to do.
Balls are provided to the classrooms, but hula hoops and jump ropes are in limited supply. P.E. activities are limited to twice a week, and access to P.E. equipment is also limited. Because my students spend much of their school day seated indoors, they look forward to being outdoors. The classes are rotated through weekly play areas that are not structured and much of the equipment has been damaged and not replaced so the students usually only have balls to play with. I would like my students to have more play equipment.
