My class of 1st graders is a wonderful group of enthusiastic and bright kids. Our school is in the inner city where hopeful families struggle to raise their kids among the lure of drugs, gangs, and crime. Of the 25 children in my class 18 are English Language Learners. All of the students are eligible for free lunch. The children come with a strong desire to learn. They eagerly listen to stories and seek clarification when they encounter unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts. They love to hear new stories and meet new characters whom we follow through a variety of adventures across different books.
