Most of my students are first, second, or third generation Americans. For some of them, English is their second, sometimes third language. Most of the families are working class, doing what they can to provide for their children. Typically, parent education ranges from elementary to some college. Though the challenges are many, the children at our Southern California elementary school, through the diligent effort of the school staff, the parents, and the students themselves, usually overcome those hurdles.
