I have taught the past 24 years at a kindergarten through sixth grade school in rural Northern California. We have a population of families of whom approximately 80% receive free and reduced lunch at school. Many of these children come from single family homes and several are welfare recipients and English Language Learners. And although our students often do not come from the most stable situations, they find a sense of family, community, and stability at our school. Many of our students we stay connected with even after they leave our school. And we are often visited by past students as well.
