As a NYC certified N-6, reading teacher, and now certified library media specialist, I discovered early on the major emphasis in every school is reading. I also saw the relationship in my classes, year after year between the poorest readers and the worst behaved students. While getting a Master’s in Reading, I was researching and finding more and more evidence about tape assisted reading and the positive effect it has on poor readers. I always taught 3rd or 4th grades and I know this does not sound politically correct, but beside the less able readers often being poorly behaved, they were practically all boys! Our school of about 500 students is a Title I school with 98% eligible for free lunch. However, every year we make strides. We also have an influx of immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ghana, and so many other countries. Reading and hearing English together is a fabulous way to accelerate learning English.
