I have a wonderful group of students, many with very chaotic and unstable home lives. Our district is a high poverty neighborhood. Many of my students have witnessed violence and have parents who are incarcerated. Some students live with relatives, and our community struggles with keeping children in school. Their home lives are often chaotic, but school is a safe place for them to learn, and they are excited to be here. This is the first year that classroom guidance lessons have been taught, and the staff is very excited about my ideas for developing a comprehensive counseling program here. These are lessons that badly needed and many children are not getting at home. The children have been very excited about coming to classroom guidance and have been eager to share their experiences. They especially have connected to lessons with storybooks, and it helps them to see that other children experience the same types of things that they deal with.
