I have the opportunity to teach students who do not have these strong auditory skills, but they are required to learn by listening for a large part of their day. These students have been diagnosed with various disabilities including autism, learning disability, emotional/behavioral disability, deaf/hard of hearing, and language delays. In order for these students progress they need teaching done in other modalities including the visual modality. Visual aids can help these students in two ways: 1. the students can learn new information and skills with the visual supports. 2. they can work on building their auditory skills with varying degrees of visual support. These visual supports can be faded over time as their auditory skills get stronger. Without these visual aids, these students feel overwhelmed and feel defeated. When they are given the right support, they see that they can learn, and the pride in their faces is the best reward.
