My African-American and Latin-American students bring rich cultural backgrounds into the classroom; most speak Spanish and English! They love to talk and share ideas! Ours is a beautiful, blue, brand new public school opening just last year with an "Explorer" mascot; our young scholars love to investigate their immediate neighborhood and larger world! Most of our students fall under Title I, living in families of poverty, rich in family love, support, and high ambitions for a better future. In fact, most of our students come from relatively recent immigrant families in pursuit of a better future for their children acquired through education. This requires we, educators, prepare ALL of our students for future college and careers, which means they must understand factual texts, often a challenge for students with a non-standard English or second languages at home whom can learn like any others, in spite of economic differences, if only they have access to the right resources!
