My students are children with disabilities. Their disabilities range from Specific Learning Disability to Autism. Academically, my students are performing at least two grade levels below where they should be. Reading, writing and math are very difficult subjects for them. They often need maximum teacher assistance in order to complete tasks or projects. So when they do complete a project or assignment, they are overjoyed and proud. Their motivation levels increase and they dedicate themselves more to their work. Our school is in an urban neighborhood, filled with social issues ranging from gang activity, to drug use/dealing and violence. Our school is considered low income with 98% of our students eligible for free lunch. Our families either work in low paying jobs or are laid off from their work. Some children do not have their biological parents and are raised by their extended families.
