Our school is over 80 years old, and it feels like our classroom carpet is about the same age. In reality, the carpet is at least 20 years old and is literally disintegrating as the students sit on it each day. It is not very comfortable because it has become so worn, and because it is so old, there are some stains that just don’t come out. The backing that keeps the carpet from bunching up is almost non-existent which makes it difficult to keep the carpet in place and also makes it a tripping hazard at times. By donating to our project, the students will have a comfortable, clean, safe place to sit, and a place where they do a great deal of their learning. We use the carpet as a gathering area and for so many other purposes including mini-lessons, listening to stories, small group work, watching videos and for indoor recess activities to name a few. A welcoming environment is so important to help students feel safe and stay focused. We use flexible seating in our classroom and students like to use the carpet area as a place to sit and do their work. A new carpet will go a long way in updating our classroom and giving students a more pleasant, safe and comfortable place to learn.
