My class is composed of both English language learners and Standard English speakers. They are students that are too young for Kindergarten and too old for pre-school. My program helps them develop physically, socially and academically before entering Kindergarten.
All my students come from low-income families which qualifies them for free lunch. My students are very limited in their oral language skills, so limited that they may not know their fruits, vegetables, and colors. Most speak one word or two word phrases instead of complete sentences. However, when I observe my students play in the classroom’s different centers I see their vocabulary expand and their language and communication skills improve.
In the dramatic play area, students pretend to be doctors, pilots, and chefs. They talk about different professions and their responsibilities. Because of the school and district budget cuts I have limited materials in my classroom. I am trying to get more resources for my students.
