This project is designed to expose students to the idea of engineering in their daily lives. Students will use materials to create various projects to explain why water is important in our lives and how engineers create solutions to solve drought-related problems. These materials will be used in conjunction with the engineering design plan. Students often create their own engineered projects using consumable materials but this would make a good starting platform for understanding. Having non-consumable materials would allow students to readily revisit basic principles of engineering.
Hands-on learning is essential in my classroom for understanding how things work and how to improve and engineer new designs.
My students don't have the opportunities for this type of learning at home and in our classroom, we have limited supplies. The water testing kits and digital cameras will provide my students with unique opportunities to learn about engineering and be able to create short videos to educate others about the importance of water in our everyday lives.
