Our school consists of 2000 students in grades 6-9. We are divided into 4 small learning communities. We are in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our city with more than 90% of our students qualifying for free meals at school. Peer mediators are from all 4 learning communities and represent the entire school population in terms of race, ethnicity, grade level, academic achievement and ability levels. Current and past mediators include honor students, physically and academically handicapped, athletes, nerds and regular kids. They are trained using the American Bar Association's recognized mediation techniques and handle more than 100 mediations per year. Students are referred for mediation by themselves, deans, faculty and adult staff members. Mediators serve an average of 1000 students each year. Most mediators begin in the 6th or 7th grade and remain until the end of 8th grade. They give up their electives in order to provide this valuable service to our school.
