In the spring, I like to do lots of life science with my first graders. We will plant seeds in our class, record and observe the life cycles, and work in the garden. The students are finishing up a year in first grade, and they've made amazing progress in writing. I like to celebrate this accomplishment by doing writing projects where we publish their original books.
I find that teaching is always more effective when we present materials in a unit, so I will be teaching a unit that integrates nonfiction and narrative writing with life science and hands-on gardening.
I have requested planting pots and seeds, paper, ink cartridges, and a printer to enable classroom publishing of our student garden books. We will use the planting pots and seeds to observe plant life cycles. I also included a gardening book that teaches a fascinating lesson about finding Fibonacci sequence swirls in the school garden and nature.
Most of my students live in apartments, so having the opportunity to garden and also create books to take home to their families is a wonderful gift that my students will treasure. Your help donating to this project is appreciated.
