Our K-2nd grade school population is largely Latino 5-8 year olds who qualify for free and reduced lunches. Many of them don't have grassy yards to play soccer at home, or balls of their own to practice. If they do play at home, they use their coats on the ground for goals. Unlike my children, most of them don't have the money to sign up for the local recreation leagues to give them the skills to compete for a spot on school teams later on. I want to offer them skills, learning to respect coaches (authority), how to follow suggestions, and learn the joy of perseverance.
