They have big questions, hungry minds, and deep hearts. We are studying the solar system, animal adaptations, and Native American cultures this year. Yet, their interests are broad and deep--from horses and human rights to black holes and world geography. My students are 70% English Language Learners and about 90% qualify for free/reduced meals. Many of my students recently transferred to my school from other neighborhood schools and bring with them a range of reading abilities. Some of my third graders are already reading on a fifth grade reading level, while others are passing the kindergarten reading assessment. Yet all of them are deep, critical thinkers of how our world works and are eager to learn more about their world and beyond.
