We are a suburban Title 1 high school with about 1200 students; most qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our community is primarily blue-collar and has suffered during the recent economic distress. In addition, our district found itself in debt and has instituted an austere budget in an effort to eliminate debt. Because of these spending cuts, we do not have access to adding books to our Media Center or for a classroom library. My students are ninth graders in a co-taught English Language Arts class. Some have reading disabilities; some are simply struggling readers; some think reading is "stupid." Like all ninth graders, my students are energetic, loud, and opinionated. They also (despite many complaints) like to learn. I enjoy teaching freshmen--their unique perspective on life can be very interesting--and entertaining!
