My students are bright, happy, energetic young people who truly want to learn at their hometown middle school. I teach children who have a wide range of ability levels, but regardless of ability, they all have something to offer, and I believe they need to share what they know and can do with other children in our community. The importance of this became apparent to me recently when I performed in a local production of Steel Magnolias. It taught me that I could learn and remember lines and perform them in front of an audience. I long for some of my students to enjoy a similar self-esteem building experience. Therefore, I am planning to have them dramatize some of the poems of Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss by learning the rhymes, acting out the plot lines, creating props, and finally, sharing their production with others.
