This is what people who love books do, and in my fifth grade classroom, we love to read. My students, 89% of whom live in poverty, defy the national stereotype that poor kids aren't scholars. Our school's emphasis on developing strong reading is part of what is making the difference for these emerging scientists, engineers, authors and policymakers. Fifth graders are skipping recess once a week to gather for books clubs because they are so excited about the knowledge, narrative and new worlds that are opening for them through books. To get there, we need to keep reading.

About my class
