My school is located in a rural Michigan village that is struck with high poverty. More than sixty-eight percent of students are enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program in the school. Over the past few years, enrollment in our calculus course has increased. This is due to the fact that our students are grasping the hopes of further education after high school and want to be successful, as many of them come from homes where there parents cannot provide the life they would like to give them. Every student has the desire to learn but not all have the proper resources to excel to their fullest potential. Due to our location in a high poverty area, students have a very difficult time obtaining the technology to advance to the higher level math courses being offered to them. Without the correct calculators students will become discouraged to continue their education in math and won’t have a full understanding of the subject. The calculators will make things better by helping the students learn with a visual aid and more accurate renderings of graphs. They are necessary because students can’t afford them themselves and if the students find the math easier they will stay in the classes.
