My kindergarten class of four and five year olds is comprised of African American children. My students live in a low income area in public housing. My students attend a title 1 school where the majority of them receive the free lunch program. These children seldom ever complain about how difficult things are at school and at home. Instead they come up to school each day smiling and excited to be there and learning. These children are responsible and respectful. They always hurry to help a teacher or child in need. They are very generous of spirit. Anyone who has met them loves them as they are delightful. My students are without a great deal. Some come daily without class supplies or a warm coat. Many arrive without breakfast even though they are two hours late. My students need a great deal of support if they are to begin to bridge the gap as they can not do it alone. Let's work to help them.
