My class attends an inner-city school in California. The majority of the students, including those who are in my class, are from low-income, limited-English families. My second-graders work hard to learn English, reading and the other subjects. They feel it is a privilege to go to school. They are also thrilled whenever we get some new books (even withdrawn books from the public library) or some new game that I make at home. They enjoy learning, and sharing what they learn with each other. Students do not all learn at the same time, and mine are no different. I teach them in small groups during part of the day. While I work with a group, the others have independent or group assignments.
