The books selected are made up of diverse characters and fill a need we have based on our current library inventory. Of our 827 students, 51.2% are African American, 44.7% are white, 2.3% Hispanic/Latino, .7% Asian, .5% two or more races, and .2% unclassified. However, our library book characters have a much different breakdown with 75.5% of our grade 5-8 library books with white main characters, and 74.7% of our Young Adult (YA) library books with white main characters. Our students deserve to be able to find themselves in the books they read. Not only would this increase reading of non-classroom related materials, it would improve students’ acceptance and understanding of other students. The hope is that our school library represents our student population and promotes quality materials that are as diverse and unique as the population we serve. Everyone deserves to see themselves in a character.
