First graders need to be able to build a strong understanding of numbers with hands-on and engaging materials. They need to be able to work together and discuss their problem solving strategies and math thinking. I have been trained in math workshop and math recovery and I want to bring this new learning into my classroom. Cards and dice are great learning tools that help students’ fluency with numerals. I will use the teacher whiteboard and mini whiteboards for small group guided math. Math workshop provides for differentiation and math choice. Rekenreks help build student understanding of addition and subtraction strategies. Students will also use ten frame cards to build counting skills and to work on composing and decomposing numbers.
