I teach at a comprehensive high school in California. Over 80% of my students are English Learners (primarily Spanish speaking), including a full class of low-intermediate English learners. Also, 30% of my students are designated as Special Education. More than 75% of students qualify for a free or reduced lunch and the number keeps growing each year. While many students have an iPod, iPhone, or other type of smart phone, I've discovered that most of my students do not know what kind of academic tools a computer with internet can provide. There seems to be an ever increasing technological divide with students who have the computer skills desired in the workforce, and those who don't. If I model computer use in my class with an LCD projector, students can then practice the use of those tools at home, in another subject, or in my class when we are able to use the computer lab.
