Many of my students have been recommended to transitional kindergarten because their birthdays are at the end of the year (between September 1 and December 2)and they lack the skills and maturity to be in a traditional kindergarten classroom. Traditional kindergarten is now more academic than in the past and transitional kindergarten gives them an extra year of school and the opportunity to be developmentally ready for kindergarten. For many students, it is their first school experience and therefore may come with unidentified special needs. Transitional kindergarten gives these young children the opportunity to be successful and develop a strong foundation in education.
